Before and After

FAQs on Eyelid Surgery:

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty, commonly called Eyelid Surgery, is a surgical procedure performed on the upper or lower eyelid to prevent drooping and to correct the tired look that loose skin and puffy bags below the eyes creates. Specifically, eyelid surgery can treat the following:

  • Sagging skin that creates folds on the upper eyelid
  • Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids or bags under the eyes
  • Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower and upper eyelid

For most patients, eyelid surgery is a cosmetic procedure, but in some cases, eyelid surgery is necessary to correct obstructions to regular eyesight that make it very uncomfortable and difficult to see.

Who is a candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid-lift surgery (blepharoplasty) is for people who naturally have a small eyeshadow space. This is an option when the skin above the eye begins to hang over your lid. Lower-lid blepharoplasty is for people whose lower eyelid has developed bags due to heredity and aging factors and can help people who look more tired than they actually are.

What can I expect from my Eyelid Surgery consultation?

The blepharoplasty process will be slightly different for everyone, as each surgery is personalized to achieve your desired effect. During a consultation, we will determine whether you want surgery focused on both eyes and whether both upper and lower eyelids require attention. We will develop a personalized plan for your specific surgery, and where incisions will need to be placed. This can involve both outside and inside the eyelids.

What happens during Eyelid Surgery?

During surgery, small cuts are made in the natural folds of your eyelids so that they will be hidden post-surgery. Small amounts of fat and skin may be removed in the process, leaving you with unhooded, wide eyes after recovery.

How long does Eyelid Surgery take?

This surgery typically takes between 1 to 2 hours. You may experience some minor pain, tenderness, and some swelling within the first week after the surgery. For this reason, you will need to be picked up from the clinic by someone else who can drive you home.

What is the recovery process for Eyelid Surgery?

Stitches stay in for only five days, and surgical bruising disappears over the next two weeks. You can wear eye makeup again after 10 days. It is recommended that you take at least a week off work to recover from this procedure, and refrain from strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and any physical exertion for around 3 weeks. You will be prescribed eye ointment to aid your recovery.
