Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to address some of the visible signs of aging. Specifically, fillers can address changes in the face caused by a natural thinning of facial tissues that occurs with age. Dermal filler injections are very popular with millions of men and woman, as they do not require surgery.

Injectable dermal fillers offer a minimally invasive method for plumping thin lips, enhancing shallow contours, softening facial creases, removing wrinkles, and improving the appearance of scars. Because of their various uses and wide applicability, dermal fillers can be very helpful for those with early signs of aging, or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation surgery.

There are a variety of filler products currently approved by the FDA. Depending on the brand being utilized for treatment, the base ingredients of each filler will be one of the following:

  • Hyaluronic acid (a substance naturally found in your skin that helps to keep it hydrated)
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite (a calcium-rich substance, normally found in our bones, that lasts longer than a Hyaluronic acid filler)
  • Poly-L-lactic Acid (a biocompatible and biodegradable synthetic substance used in a variety of other medical capacities, including dissolvable stitches; these fillers help the skin naturally begin to rebuild depleted collagen levels)
  • Polymethylmethacrylate (a synthetic, biocompatible substance that contains collagen and Bellafill®)

These base ingredients will determine the longevity of a specific dermal filler injection. Talk to your doctor to determine which one will best address your treatment needs.
